Whether you’re looking for entry level work or to capitalise on supervisory experience you already have, there are positions as diverse as the people looking for them.

Local government officials assist in developing policies and procedures for the council. There are various roles to cover, including health, recreation, tourism, transport, education, finance and housing. Members of local government interact with specialists, administrators, local council members and the general public.

The actual activities of those holding local and federal government jobs will vary, and depend on the departments involved. Some are more technical positions, while others deal more closely with members of the general public.

You can search for Victorian local government jobs and positions in other areas in the local government jobs directory for each area. Qualifying for these jobs will entail making sure that you have completed the required education for the position, and detailing any previous work experience that is relevant to the job.

Local government jobs in SA and other areas in Australia have differing rates of pay, depending on the exact position for which you are applying. If you are a graduate entering your first year in local government jobs in WA, for example, you may expect between $33,000 and $35,000 per annum.

The typical activities for those with local and state government jobs may include assisting in the planning stages of projects, implementing council decisions and providing guidance and support to the local Cabinet or committees.

Depending on your level within the government, employees with Australian public service jobs may also be included in arranging meetings, researching information for reports and meeting with other members of council departments. You may also be conferring with external agencies and others in the private sector, including local organisations and contractors.
